The Mighty Montagus
Earls of Salisbury and Kings of Man 1301-1428

The ‘Mighty Montagus’ were six generations of the family between 1300 and 1428. As Lords Montagu and Earls of Salisbury they played a central part in the political and military events of their time, being close confidants of the English kings from Edward II to Henry V. Two of them were also ‘kings’ of Man for some sixty years and built most of Castle Rushen on the Island. This book tells the story of their very eventful lives against a colourful background of tournaments and jousting as well as the battles, sieges, atrocities and intrigues that were part of everyday life in a period when England was constantly at war with Scotland and France.
