Born 1944 in Cheshire, UK, (forenames Derek Owen) only child of Edwin and Ida Winterbottom, later hotel proprietors in Lancashire and North Wales.
At Rossall School, Fleetwood, 1949-1962. Read History at Brasenose College, Oxford, 1962-65 (BA, MA), and Diploma in Education at Oxford 1965-1966, including one term teaching at St Paul's School, London.
History teacher at Westminster School, London, 1966-67 and Clifton College, Bristol, 1967-72. Studied for degree of B.Phil. in Medieval Studies at University of York, 1972-73, with dissertation on reasons for the economic and political decline of York in the 15th century. Head of History at Berkhamsted School, Herts, 1973-1979, and Schoolmaster Fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, Lent Term 1980. |
