Charles Kerruish - Manx Politician and Commonwealth Parliamentarian

Sir Charles Kerruish (1917-2003) was the dominant force in Manx politics in the second half of the twentieth century and it was his lifetime's ambition, eventually realised, to bring about a change in the 'colonial' status of the Isle of Man so that it could become a self-governing community. As Speaker of the House of Keys from 1962 to 1990 his personality and oratorical skills were enormously influential and he served as the first elected President of Tynwald from 1990 until 2000. He was also well-known on the world stage through his work with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, of which he was President (1983-1984).
